5. Mattermost

Mattermost introduction

We’re not a big fan of emails within our company, thus we’re using Mattermost instead.

No worries if you don’t know Mattermost (yet). You might know Slack, Microsoft Teams, Rocket Chat or alike. Mattermost is similar to these platforms, but self-hosted and privacy-aware.

It is our most important internal communication platform, and here are the reasons why we’re using it:

  • A replacement for internal emails

  • A good alternative for decentral / asynchronous communication

  • Segregation of different topics through different Mattermost channels

  • Notifications from GitLab (e.g. new issues, merge requests, deployments)

  • Notifications from other 3rd party tools (e.g. Kudos or VoIP calls)

Mattermost login

Either login into Mattermost via web browser, or download a Mattermost client for your desktop and / or mobile phone.

When you’ve logged in, ask your coach to add you to the Mattermost confirm group, so that you’ve access to all of our channels.

Mattermost hands on

As soon as you’ve access to the confirm group:

  • Feel free to join to the channels you’re interested in

  • Try send your buddy or coach a private message to see if it works

  • Configure Mattermost the way you like it to behave
